An Architecture for Active Metamaterial Particles and Experimental Validation at Rf
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a class of metamaterial particle that employs active elements to overcome the inherent limitations of their passive counterparts, such as significant losses, high dispersion, and narrow bandwidth. The active unit cell can be designed to have either an electric or magnetic response. For a magnetic active metamaterial, we derive the design equations for the unit cell and validate them experimentally through the extraction of effective permittivity and permeability from S-parameter measurements of a unit cell in a waveguide. We show that phase delay in the amplifier can be used to control losses and dispersion. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Q-based design equations for resonant metamaterials and experimental validation
Practical design parameters of resonant metamaterials, such as loss tangent, are derived in terms of the quality factor Q of the resonant effective medium permeability or permittivity. Through electromagnetic simulations of loopbased resonant particles, it is also shown that the Q of the effective medium response is essentially equal to the Q of an individual resonant particle. Thus, by measuri...
متن کاملMetamaterial-based transmit and receive system for whole-body magnetic resonance imaging at ultra-high magnetic fields
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at ultra-high fields (UHF), such as 7 T, provides an enhanced signal-to-noise ratio and has led to unprecedented high-resolution anatomic images and brain activation maps. Although a variety of radio frequency (RF) coil architectures have been developed for imaging at UHF conditions, they usually are specialized for small volumes of interests (VoI). So far, whol...
متن کاملPhase conjugation and negative refraction using nonlinear active metamaterials.
We present an experimental demonstration of phase conjugation using nonlinear metamaterial elements. Active split-ring resonators loaded with varactor diodes are demonstrated theoretically to act as phase-conjugating or time-reversing discrete elements when parametrically pumped and illuminated with appropriate frequencies. The metamaterial elements were fabricated and shown experimentally to p...
متن کاملRefraction at the Interface of a Lossy Metamaterial
The refraction phenomenon at the interface of an ordinary material and a lossy metamaterial has been investigated. For oblique incidence on the lossy metamaterial, the planes of constant amplitude of the refracted wave are parallel to the interface and the plane of constant phases make a real angle with the interface (real refraction angle). The real refraction angle and hence, the real refract...
متن کاملIntegrated Process Planning and Active Scheduling in a Supply Chain-A Learnable Architecture Approach
Through the lens of supply chain management, integrating process planning decisions and scheduling plans becomes an issue of great challenge and importance. Dealing with the problem paves the way to devising operation schedules with minimum makespan; considering the flexible process sequences, it can be viewed as a fundamental tool for achieving the scheme, too. To deal with this integration, t...
